Pioneers of Authentic Movement

A form of expressive movement therapy that emerged from an inner-directed approach to movement developed by Mary Starks Whitehouse, a pioneer in dance therapy. The history of Authentic Movement dates back to the 1950s when Whitehouse created this unique branch of dance therapy.

Authentic Movement focuses on deep inner listening and expressive movement. It provides individuals with a self-directed form of movement exploration, allowing them to discover their own unique movement pathways. Through this practice, participants bridge the conscious and unconscious realms of their being, fostering a deeper connection with themselves and their bodies.

Mary Starks Whitehouse integrated her studies and experiences in movement therapy to develop Authentic Movement in California. She believed that dance had always been a sacred language throughout human history, serving as a means of expression and communication with the divine.

Over the years, Authentic Movement has gained recognition and popularity as a transformative and healing practice. It offers individuals an opportunity to listen to and honor their body's voice, cultivating a greater sense of self-awareness, emotional release, and personal growth.
